COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Newton Nitros swim team finished fourth out in the medium teams division, and 19th overall out of 40 teams scoring, at the USA Swimming Missouri Valley Long Course Championships July 27 through 30 at the University of Missouri Aquatic Center in Columbia.

The Newton team had seven swimmers compete.

“Considering we didn’t have enough swimmers to compete in

the relays this was a huge success for our team,” coach Clinton Bailey said. “We turned in a lot of fast times and were just

28 points shy of third place and reaching the podium with significantly larger teams.”

Newton swimmers finished with 199 points.

Newton was led by Andrew Guyer with 106 points, setting seven club records in the boys’ 10 and under age group.

Guyer won the 400-meter freestyle in 5:36.40. He was second in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:24.16. He took third in the 50-meter backstroke in 39.49.
