Wingnuts fall

to Explorers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Tony Campana hit a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Sioux City Explorers to a 5-4 win over the Wichita Wingnuts Thursday night in American Association play in Sioux City.

Down 4-2, Eudor Garcia and Michael Lang each doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth to score a run. Dre Gleason drew a walk and Tanner Vavra singled to load the bases, setting up Campana’s walk-off hit.

Lang finished the game four for five hitting with two RBIs. Vavra finished four for five with an RBI.

Wichita scored in the top of the fourth when Brennen Salgado drew a bases-loaded walk. Lang hit a solo home run for the Express with one out in the bottom of the fourth.

Vavra hit an RBI triple with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

Wichita’s Matt Chavez tied the game with an RBI ground out in the top of the eighth. Another run scored on a wild pitch. Leo Vargas drove in a run on a ground out in the ninth.

Christian Stringer and Richard Prigatano each went three for four for Wichita.

Sioux City starter Kramer Sneed lasted seven innings, allowing a run on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Flores (4-3) finished the game for the win, giving up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Wichita starter Eddie Medina lasted six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Josh Goosssen-Brown and Mike Devine each threw a shutout inning with a strikeout each. Seth Harvey (1-3) took the loss in the bottom of the ninth.

Sioux City improves to 34-36. Wichita drops to 43-26, 14 games ahead of Cleburne.

The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today in Sioux City.
