HESSTON — The Hesston High School volleyball team was awarded an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 school year.

The award is given to the top 25 percent of teams based on team grade-point-average.

There were 277 high school teams nationally that received the award.

Salina Stockade

SALINA — The Wichita Wingnuts are on a five-game winning streak after a twinbill sweep of the Salina Stockade Tuesday at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Wichita won the first game 9-4 and the second game 5-0.

In the first game, Salina scored four runs in the top of the second inning. Roche Woodard had an RBI single. Jonathan Moroney had a two-run single. A run scored on an error.

Wichita replied with six runs in the bottom of the first. Leo Vargas hit a two-run single, Tyler Sullivan hit a two-run double, Richard Prigatano hit an RBI double and Brent Clevlen hit an RBI single.

Clevlen posted his 1,000th RBI as a pro.

Zac Fisher drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fisher hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth.

Wichita starter Tim Brown (2-1) went five innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Brown becomes the team’s all-time win leader.

James Campbell and Seth Harvey each threw a scoreless inning.

Clevlen and Fisher each went two for three hitting for Wichita. Matt Chavez went two for three. Vargas went two for two.

Jared Koenig (1-2) lasted two innings in the loss. Dillon Sunnafrank and Logan Gillaspie went two innings each.

Roche Woodward went two for three for the Stockade. Moroney went two for four.

In the second game, Ryan Kussmaul (6-4) went four innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts. Tyler Kane, Garrett Gould and Austin Boyle each threw an inning. Kane struck out two.

Wichita took the lead in the second game when Vargas hit a two-run single with two outs in the second inning. Vargas hit another two-run single in the fourth inning. Christian Stringer added a sacrifice fly.

Vargas was two for three hitting. Prigatano went two for two. Moroney and Logan Trowbridge each went two for three for Salina.

Jordan Cummings (1-3) took the loss for Salina, going three innings. Connor Bach finished the game.

Wichita is 43-25 and leads Cleburne by 14 games in the AA South Division. Wichita is now tied with Lincoln for the best record in the league.

Salina drops to 10-58, 33 games behind Wichita in the South and is now out of the playoff race.

Wichita takes a day off today for travel and opens a four-game series 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Sioux City, 33-34 and in fourth place in AA Central, 10 games behind Lincoln.
