EL DORADO — Hesston High School graduate and Bethel College recruit Zach Esau passed for a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown to lift the West squad to a 22-21 win over the East Saturday in the Shrine Bowl charity all-star football game for recent high school grads at BG Products Stadium in El Dorado.

Esau hit five of 12 passes with an interception for 85 yards and rushed four times for six yards.

Trailing 21-14, the West scored on a seven-yard pass from Esau to Dylan Foos with 1:37 left in the third quarter. Esau’s two-point conversion run failed.

With a minute to play, Zach Helbing of Mulvane posted a sack in the endzone to give the West the win. Helbing was named the game’s MVP.

The West scored first on a 41-yard pass from Jacob Murray of Great Bend to Kaden Davis of Ellsworth. The PAT run failed. Esau scored on a one-yard run late in the first quarter and hit Murray for a two-point conversion pass.

With 34 seconds left in the first half, the East’s Dalton Cowan of Topeka Seaman hit an 18-yard pass to Cuttar Huss of Troy. Bryce Steffens of St. James Academy hit the PAT kick.

J.J. Letcher of Kansas City Piper scored on a 73-yard run for the East. Brandon Mlekus of Frontenac followed with a three-yard run. Steffens hit both kicks.

Letcher led the East in rushing with 75 yards. Letcher and Huss each had 39 yards receiving. Mlekus hit 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards with an interception.

For the West, Murray hit 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards with an interception. Davis finished with 95 yards receiving. Kody Gonzalez of Goddard had 63 yards rushing.

Halstead’s Layke Heimerman had one carry for a loss of nine yards for the West. Heimerman also had a fumble recovery.
