FARGO, N.D. — Newton High School wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson finished third in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the U.S. Marine Corps-USA Wrestling Cadet National Championships July 15 through 23 in Fargo.
Hendrickson wrestled at 195 pounds in both divisions. He finished 6-1 in freestyle and 6-1 in Greco-Roman.
In freestyle, Hendrickson pinned Cody Goodman of Illinios in 5:06 in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Hendrickson pinned Dominik Vacura of Minnesota in 1:39. In the round of 16, Hendrickson downed Troy Klein of Wisconsin in 1:04. In the quarterfinals, Hendrickson fell to Matthew Cover of Ohio 12-11.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Hendrickson downed Cody Fisher of Iowa 22-14. In the consolation semifinals, Hendrickson edged Peter Christensen of Illinois 9-8.
In the third-place match, Hendrickson blanked Santos Cantu of Oregon 11-0.
In Greco-Roman, Hendrickson downed Hayden Barley of New York 10-0 in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Hendrickson downed Julian Brown of Illinois 6-4. In the round of 16, Hendrickson downed Ramiro Gomez of Iowa 10-0. In the quarterfinals, Hendrickson downed Cover 12-1.
In the semifinals, Hendrickson fell to Ashton Sharp of Missouri 20-8.
In the consolation semifinals, Hendrickson edged Aiden Conner of Texas 2-0. In the third-place match. Hendrickson downed Cover 9-8.
Hendrickson was the highest finishing Kansas wrestler in both divisions. He led the Kansas team to a 19th-place team finish in Greco-Roman and a 23rd-place finish in freestyle.
Newton’s Colby Beer finished 1-2 in freestyle at 220 pounds, falling to Braxton Amos of West Virginia 11-0, beating R.J. Carpenter of Ohio and losing to Thomas Mukai of Virginia 4-0. In Greco-Roman, Beer lost to Mason Maulding of New York 11-2 and Tyler Delooff of Michigan 10-0.
Grant Treaster finished 0-2 at 106 pounds in freestyle, losing to Colton Drousias of Indiana 13-3 and Tanner Cook of Montana 11-0.
