LARNED — The Newton 14U Babe Ruth Baseball Team claimed a 2-2 finish at the 14-year-old Kansas Babe Ruth State Tournament in Larned.

It was one of the highest finishes for a Newton team at a state Babe Ruth tourney in recent years.

Newton opened play with a 13-3 win over Clearwater. Newton used three runs in the second inning and six runs in the third to break the game open.

Zachary Loomis allowed three runs in 3 1-3 innings. Griffin Davis finished the game, allowing no runs.

Trev Golubski had two singles, was hit by a pitch, scored three runs and drove in a run. Braden Botterweck had a single, a double, drove in three runs and scored two runs. Max Musser had two singles, a walk and scored three runs. Peyton Maxwell had two doubles, a walk, scored two runs and scored three runs.

Botterweck was named team MVP. Golubski won the WOW Award.

Newton fell to Girard 8-0. Newton fell behind 5-0 in the first inning.

Ben Schmidt took the loss, allowing five runs in one inning. Ian Akers allowed no runs in 2 2-3 innings. Golubski finished the game, allowing three runs.

Akers won the MVP Award. Hunter Gray won the WOW Award.

Newton beat Great Bend 15-5, breaking the game open with seven runs in the third inning.

Maxwell had a double, an inside-the-park home run, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Botterweck had a single, a walk, scored two runs and drove in three runs. Davis had two singles, a run scored and three RBIs. Gray had a double, a walk and scored two runs. Golubski had a single, reached base twice on errors and scored three runs.

Davis went the distance on the mound for the win.

Davis was named team MVP. Musser won the WOW Award.

Newton finished play with an 18-3 loss to Finney County. Newton struggled with eight errors.

Akers had a single and a run scored. Davis drove in two runs and had a double. Golubski was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Botterweck had a single and a run scored.

Schmidt went three innings in the loss. Akers finished the game.

Davis was named MVP. Maxwell received the WOW Award.

Newton ended the season 18-12.
