GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Wichita Wingnuts fell behind early and were never able to catch up in a 9-3 loss to the Texas AirHogs Wednesday in American Association play at AirHog Stadium.
Wichita scored in the top of the first on a T.J. Mittelstaedt RBI double. Texas came back in the bottom of the first on a two-run Denis Phipps double. Brian Ragira added an RBI on a ground out. Phipps hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Texas took command with five runs in the bottom of the fifth on six hits. Trevor Sealey hit an RBI double. Casio Grider drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Levi Scott hit an RBI double. Ragira and Beamer Weems each hit an RBI single.
Harrison Kain hit an RBI single for Wichita in the top of the fifth. Kain drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Billy Waltrip (1-3) went five innings for the AirHogs for the win, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts. Kevin Hilton went three innings, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Robert Tasin pitched the ninth, allowing a walk.
Wichita’s Tim Brown lasted just 3 2-3 innings, giving up nine runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Josh Goossen-Brown, Eddie Medina, James Campbell and Seth Harvey combined to hold the AirHogs scoreless on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Phipps finished three for four hitting. Grider and Scott each went two for three. Alvaro Rondon and Weems each went two for four.
Wichita falls to 38-19, losing for the third straight game. Texas improves to 24-33. Wichita still leads Cleburne by 13 1/2 games in the AA South. Wichita also leads Lincoln by two games for the best record in the league. Texas is 14 games behind Wichita and moves to within a half game of Cleburne.
Wichita wraps up its series with the AirHogs at 7:05 p.m. today.
