Nickerson survived the 100 degree heat and the Salina Falcons for a 14-8 win Thursday night at Klein-Scott Field in the finals of the Kansas American Legion Baseball Class AAA Zone 5 tournament.

Nickerson (23-6) advances to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Ottawa. Salina ends the season 18-17.

Tanner Schrag pitched five innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Josh Salazar finished the game, allowing a hit and striking out two.

Salina starter Bryce Banks lasted two innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits with five walks and a strikeout. Brooke Garretson finished the game, allowing six hits, five runs, six walks and three strikeouts.

Kolbi Schrag was two for three hitting for Nickerson with a home run and five RBIs. Carson Cornelius went four for five with an RBI. Josh Salazar went two for five with two RBIs. Tré Garcia also drove in two runs.

Gleason Williams went two for three hitting for Salina with four RBIs. Brady McAfee drove in two runs. Mikel Bozarth went three for five with an RBI. Braden Diehl went two for four.

Salina put its first two batters on base and failed to move them. Nickerson put its first two batters on base and scored them both.

A pair of two-out errors in the top of the second inning led to five Salina runs. Williams and McAfee each had a two-run double in the inning.

Nickerson used four hits, three walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the second inning to score seven runs.

A two-out error in the top of the fourth led to a Salina run. Nickerson also scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth.

Three two-out hits in the top of the fifth got Salina back in the game with two runs. Williams drove in the run. Kolbi Schrag answered with a two-run home run. Nickerson added another run in the inning.

A bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the sixth led to Nickerson’s final run of the game.
