Defensive lapses in two innings proved too much for the Newton Post 2 Senior Knights to overcome in a 7-4 loss to the Salina Falcons Wednesday in the semifinals of the Kansas American Legion Class AAA Zone 5 and 6 baseball tournament at Klein-Scott Field.

Salina scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth, aided by Newton errors. The Knights outhit Salina 11-7. Newton is denied a state berth for the first time in more than five years.

A two-out error in the top of the first inning led to three Salina runs. A Salina error in the bottom of the first led to a Newton run. Newton added a run in the second on a wild pitch.

Three errors in the top of the fifth led to three more Salina runs.

Warren Dietz hit a solo shot to left field to open the bottom of the fifth. Gleason Williams hit an RBI single for Salina in the top of the sixth.

Matt Seirer had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. With the tying run at the plate, a ground out ended the game.

Salina starter Brady McAfee went 6 2-3 innings for the win, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Kyler Berry threw the last out for the save.

Dietz took the loss for Newton, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Kaden Davis finished the game, allowing a run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

For Newton, Dietz was four for four hitting. Alex Kern, Kaden Davis and Christian Malcolm each had two hits.

Williams was two for four for Salina.

Newton ends the season 12-17.

In the Zone 6 championship game, the Arkansas City Black Diamonds took advantage of four Nickerson errors, added in with 13 hits, to claim a 14-4 win and a trip to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Ottawa.

Tied 1-1 after the first inning, Arkansas City outscored Nickerson 13-3.

Hunter O’Toole went three for four hitting for Arkansas City, driving in four runs. Halen David went two for three with three RBIs. Austin Hensley went two for three with an RBI. Steele Sarnaki went two for two with an RBI.

O’Toole pitched a complete game for the Black Diamonds, striking out eight.

John Huggard took the loss for Nickerson, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Tre Garcia finished the game.

Levi Swenson went two for three hitting for Nickerson. Kolbi Schrag drove in two runs.

Salina and Nickerson will play for the Zone 5 title at 6 p.m. today.
