The Newton Post 2 Senior Knights are still alive in the Kansas Class AAA American Legion Baseball Zone 5 and 6 Tournament after a 1-1 finish.

Sunday, the Knights had nine errors, giving up 15 runs total in the sixth and seventh inning to fall to the Arkansas City Black Diamonds 19-4. Monday in an elimination game, the Knights took and early lead and held off a late comeback to down the Wichita Aviators 11-8.

Newton plays the loser of Tuesday’s late game between Salina and Nickerson at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Zone 6 semifinals. Arkansas City meets the winner of the Salina-Nickerson game in the Zone 5 finals following Newton’s game.

Against Arkansas City, Newton scored in the second inning on a Colton Davis RBI triple. An error led to an Arkansas City run in the top of the third. Warren Dietz hit an RBI single for Newton in the bottom of the third.

An error in the top of the fourth inning led to three Arkansas City runs.

Newton scored a run on a Colton Davis infield single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Walks, a hit batter and a pair of errors led to five Ark City runs in the top of the sixth. Ark City scored 10 runs in the seventh. Newton scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Austin Hensley and Steele Sarnacki each went three for five hitting for Ark City. Sarnaki drove in four runs. Hunter O’Toole, Dominique Marr and David Mendoza drove in two runs each.

Colton Davis finished two for three hitting for Newton with two RBIs.

Michael Segree pitched the win for Ark City. O’Toole and Tanner Legleighter finished the game.

Jacob Lindenmeyer took the loss despite no earned runs charged against him. Kaden Davis, Josh Hansen, Gavin Cusick and Colton Davis also pitched.

Against Wichita, Newton scored a pair of runs in the top of the first on a Christian Malcolm single.

Jackson Wilcox hit a solo home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the first.

Newton added two more runs on two hits in the top of the second inning. Three errors in the bottom of the third led to four Wichita runs. Three Wichita errors in the top of the fourth led to four Newton runs.

Wichita scored in the fifth inning on a Zach Moser RBI double. Chance Little hit an RBI triple and scored on a ground out in the bottom of the sixth.

An error in the top of the seventh led to a Newton run.

Ayden Rolph pitched five innings for the win, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Matt Eldridge finished the game for the save, allowing a hit and a walk.

Wilcox took the loss for Wichita, allowing four runs on four hits, two walks and a strikeout. Greg Sousa finished the game.

Malcolm drove in three runs for Newton. Lindenmeyer and Matt Seirer each went two for three hitting. Seirer and Hunter Mapes each drove in two runs.

Moser finished three for four hitting for Wichita with three RBIs. Sam Loerke was three for three hitting. Wilcox finished with two RBIs.

In the opening game of the tournament, Salina topped Wichita 8-5. Each team batted around in the first inning with Salina taking a 6-4 lead. The Falcons had six hits to two for Wichita.

An error gave Wichita a run in the second inning. Salina scored on a Brooks Garretson RBI double in the fifth. Bryce Banks hit a solo shot to left field in the seventh.

Salina starter Cade Sterrett went six innings for the win. Garretson finished the game for the save. Wichita starter Braden Greer lasted just 2-3 innings in the loss.

Banks, Braden Diehl and Garretson each had two hits for Salina.
