HUTCHINSON — Barring a late withdrawl or two from the National Baseball Congress World Series, the season likely came to an end for the Newton Rebels with a pair of losses at the Mid-Kansas Collegiate Qualifier in Hutchinson.
Saturday, Newton fell to the Haven Warhawks 10-6. Monday, Newton was eliminated from the tournament with a 13-1 loss to the Hutchinson Monarchs in a game called after seven innings on the 10-run rule.
Against Haven, Newton took a 4-1 lead through 3 1/2 innings, but gave up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haven scored a run in the fifth. Newton got back in the game with two runs in the sixth.
Blake Springer drove in four runs for Haven. Ben Palenski drove in two. Trace Maddux went three for four hitting for Haven. Masen Prososki and Zac Jones each went two for four with an RBI.
Jaylund Johnson went three for four hitting for Newton. Jace Snodgrass went three for five. Brandon Hall and Rob Lain each went two for four. Hall drove in two runs. Johnson also drove in a run.
Ryan Ruder went 5 2-3 innings for Haven to claim the win, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Max Ryan finished the game, allowing three hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Lain went four innings for Newton, allowing no earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Matt Contreras finished the game for the loss, allowing three hits, four earned runs and a walk.
Against Hutchinson, Newton trailed 9-0 through the first four innings and gave up four more runs in the top of the seventh.
Newton used a pair of walks and a hit to scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Chase Feucht went seven innings for Hutchinson, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Sloan Dieter struck out three batters in three innings. Pat Gonzalez struck out three. Tyler Murphy also pitched.
Taylor Barber had four hits with six RBIs to lead Hutchinson. Trevor Turner and Quintin Crandall each had three hits and two RBIs.
Newton will likely finish the season 15-25.
