Rebels to face


HUTCHINSON — The Newton Rebels will meet the Haven Warhawks at 2 p.m. today in the opening round of the Mid-Kansas Collegiate Qualifier at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson.

The winner faces the Mulvane Patriots at 5 p.m. Sunday. The loser plays in the consolation round at 2 p.m. Monday.

Other teams in the tournament are the Hutchinson Monarchs, Kansas Cougars, Valley Center Diamond Dawgs and Salina Shock.

The tourney winner earns an automatic berth to the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Wingnuts rally

to stop Canaries

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to down the Sioux Falls Canaries 13-10 Friday night in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts trailed most of the game, but posted six runs on five hits in the eighth to take the lead.

Martin Medina finished the game three for five hitting with a home run and three RBIs. T.J. Mittelstaedt also went three for five at the plate for the Wingnuts. Christian Stringer, Brent Clevlen and Matt Chavez each added two RBIs.

For Sioux Falls, Jabari Henry hit two home runs. Blake Schmidt and Dan Moti each went two for four with three RBIs.

Wichita used six pitchers with James Campbell (2-1) getting the win. Seth Harvey pitched the ninth inning for the save, his 11th of the season.

Dylan Thompson (2-2) took the loss for Sioux Falls. Starter Grady Woods struck out seven in six innings.

Sioux Falls scored on a solo home run for Henry with one out in the top of the first inning. Moti hit a two-run triple for the Canaries in the second inning.

A pair of errors in the bottom of the second inning led to two Wichita runs. An error in the bottom of the third inning led to two more Wichita runs.

Moti grounded into a fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Harrison Kain hit an RBI single for Wichita in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Schmidt hit a two-run single, Trey Vavra hit a sacrifice fly and Michael Falsetti hit a sacrifice fly.

Wichita came back with a Martin Medina RBI double in the fifth inning. Christian Stringer hit an RBI double in the sixth inning.

In the top of the eighth, Henry hit a home run and Schmidt drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

In the bottom of the eighth, Medina hit a two-run home run, Clevlen hit a two-run single, Stringer and Zac Fisher each hit one-run singles.

Wichita is 37-16, while Sioux Falls is 25-28. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today. Wichita improves to a 12 1/2-game lead over Cleburne in the AA South.

Thunder signs


WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder signed defenseman Justin Hamonic for the 2017-18 season.

The Winnepeg native is a third-year pro, who started with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL in 2015, playing four games. He also has played with Fort Wayne and Colorado of the ECHL and the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League.

In 102 professional games, Hamonic has a goal with nine assists. He also has a pair of assists in 14 playoff games.

Before turning professional, Hamonic played four seasons with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League, scoring three goals with 43 assists in 255 games and two goals in 29 playoff games.

"Justin is a big solid stay at home defensemen with solid leadership qualities," Wichita coach Malcolm Cameron said. "He's been a captain and a part of a Kelly Cup winning team and we expect him to bring these experiences into our locker room this year. We are very excited to have Justin in a Thunder jersey."

"I'm looking forward to helping the Wichita Thunder be a successful team as well as further developing myself as a player," Hamonic said. "I've heard great things about the organization, facilities, fans, and the city of Wichita and can't wait to get down there, meet my teammates and start this season."
