The Newton Rebels dropped a pair of games to the Mulvane Patriots Wednesday to end the first season of play in the Sunflower Collegiate League.

Newton dropped the first game 6-5 and the second game 12-3. Newton ends league play 12-23.

In the first game, Mulvane took a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings, but Newton came back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Mulvane regained the lead with two runs in the fourth, but Newton scored a pair of runs in the sixth game to tie the game.

Mulvane scored a run in the top of the seventh and held Newton off in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Tyler Sutherland, Hunter Aguirre and Dalton Dinkel each had two hits for Mulvane.

Kyle Adkins drove in two runs for Newton.

Sloan Baker went five innings for Mulvane for a no-decision. Drake Harper finished the game for the win, striking out four.

Pat Gonzalez went five innings for Newton with a strikeout. Adkins finished the game, taking the loss, striking out two.

In the second game, Newton used a number of players out of position, including a number of pitchers in the field.

Mulvane put things away early with eight runs in the second inning and three in the third. Newton scored all three runs in the fifth inning.

Colton Helm went three for three hitting for Mulvane with an RBI. Jarvis Larson and Caleb Cox each drove in two runs.

Gonzales went two for three hitting for Newton with an RBI. Stephan Aguilar went two for four with an RBI.

Newton plays in the Mid-Kansas Collegiate Qualifier, which begins Friday in Hutchinson.
