The Newton Post 2 Senior Knights American Legion Baseball team took advantage of free bases to claim a 13-5 win over McPherson Post 24 Tuesday night in the regular-season home final for Newton at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton was outhit 9-6, but drew 11 walks with four hit batters. Newton pitchers gave up just two walks with one hit batters. Three McPherson errors allowed Newton four unearned runs. Newton had two errors for two unearned runs.

“I felt like that seven inning game lasted forever, but our guys did a good job of staying focused all the way through,” Newton manager Evan Gilbert said. “Our guys did a good job of getting ahead early and pitching to contact. I thought our hitters did a good job of staying in there and having good approaches. We need to do that so close to the zone tournament.’

Newton was able to bring up three players from the Junior Legion team, which ended the season Monday — Josh Edson, Henry Claassen and Gavin Cusick — giving the team added depth.

Matt Eldridge pitched 3 1-3 innings of relief for the win, striking out three and giving up two hits. Starter Sport Tegethoff allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Raine Retsma went two innings of relief in the loss for McPherson, striking out three. Marcus McDaniel and Troy Hanken each struck out two.

Dylan Werries went two for four at the plate, both doubles. Jeffrey Reed went two for four hitting with four RBIs.

Warren Dietz, Jacob Lindenmeyer and Christian Malcolm each drove in two runs for Newton. Matt Seirer and Edson each drove in a run.

McPherson punched out three runs on four hits in the top of the first. A pair of hits and a walk led to two Newton runs in the bottom of the first.

With runners at first and third base and two outs, Newton scored on a run-down play in the second inning.

An error in the bottom of the third led to three Newton runs. An error in the top of the fourth led to two McPherson runs.

Four walks and an error led to four Newton runs in the bottom of the fourth. Newton added a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

The Senior Knights are 11-15 and play at 4 p.m. today at Wichita East at Wichita East High School. Newton hosts the Class AAA Zone Tournament at 5 p.m. Sunday with Nickerson, Salina, Wichita East and Arkansas City.

“I coach at Wichita East during the school year, so I should know how to pitch to them,” Gilbert said. “They will be good competition for us. They are in our zone too. We’ll probably use everybody. Everybody will pitch for us. We’ll try to get things turned up for zone. The key will be to get hydrated tomorrow.”
