The Newton Post 2 Junior Knights American Legion baseball team learned a lot about baseball this summer as a very young team that included a couple eighth graders took the field.

The Junior Knights dropped a pair of games in the Class A zone tournament at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton fell to the Andover Jaguars 9-1 Sunday in five inning on the eight-run rule. Newton fell to Clearwater 18-11 Monday in an elimination game.

Against the Andover Jaguars, Newton scored a run on an error in the top of the first, but gave the run back on an error in the bottom of the second.

Walks led to three runs for the Jaguars in the bottom of the third inning. The Jags started hitting the ball in the fourth inning. An error in the fifth led to the run-rule run.

Creighton Thatcher went 2 1-3 innings for the win, striking out three. Evans Hayes finished the game with three strikeouts.

Newton used four pitchers with starter Camden Fenwick taking the loss, striking out three. Zac Kennell, Josh Edson and Jaxon Brackeen also pitched.

Sam Garretson went two for three hitting for the Jaguars, driving in two runs. Blake Robinson also drove in two runs. Thatcher went two for four hitting.

In elimination play against Clearwater, a two-out error in the first inning led to four runs for the Indians, three unearned. In the second inning, Denton Demel hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run. Clearwater added another run in the second.

Five hits and three errors in the top of the third led to 10 Knight runs. Demel tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the third.

An error in the top of the fourth led to a Newton run. Clearwater countered with six runs on three hits. Demel had a two-run double in the inning.

Demel finished the game three for four hitting with seven RBIs. Austin Carlson went two for four with two RBIs. Brent Asper also drove in two runs. Bryce Wiens went two for four with an RBI.

Camden Fenwick and Konar Jaso both went two for four for Newton with an RBI. Josh Edson went two for five with an RBI. Gavin Cusick drove in two runs.

Newton used four pitchers with Zach Kennell taking the loss.

Newton ends the season 5-22. Most of the players will be eligible to return next season.

In the first game of the tourney, the Andover Trojans edged the Clearwater Indians 4-1. Trojan pitcher Cole Elder threw a complete-game three-hitter, allowing no walks and striking out six. The Trojans had just one earned run in the game, aided by Clearwater errors. Jaxton Tracy took the loss for the Indians, striking out four. Taylor Currie finished the game.

No player had more than one hit.

In Monday’s state qualifying game, the Andover Jaguars used 10 walks and five errors to down the rival Andover Trojans 16-1 in four innings on the 10-run rule.
