WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts got by the Texas AirHogs 4-2 Wednesday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

Eddie Medina (5-1) went five innings for the win, allowing four hits, a run, three walks and six strikeouts. Garrett Gould went two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Austin Boyle struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning. Mike Devine struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for his second save of the year.

T.J. Bozeman (2-3) went six innings for Texas, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Bill Waltrip fiinished the game with a hit and a strikeout in two innings.

With two outs in the second inning, Wichita scored on a wild pitch. Trevor Sealey tied the game for the AirHogs in the top of the fourth with an RBI single.

The Wingnuts regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run Richard Prigatano single with one out. An error with two outs in the bottom of the sixth led to another Wichita run.

Casio Grider led off the top of the seventh with a home run.

Brent Clevlen and Prigatano each went two for four hitting for Wichita. Grider finished two for five for Texas.

Wichita is 27-12, while Texas is 11-28. The series concludes at 7:05 p.m. today. Wichita will send 3-0 Jordan Cooper against AirHog Michael Freeman (1-1).

HOUSTON — Goals by Ike Opara and Gerso gave Sporing Kansas City a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo Wednesday in the round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

Opara scored in the 61st minute with assists to Kevin Ellis and Ilie Sanchez. Gerso insured the win in the 90+1 minute with an assist from Latif Blessing.

Sporing held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Joe Willis had five saves for Houston. Tim Melia had two saves for the clean sheet in goal for Sporting.

Sporting advances to the quarterfinals against FC Dallas at July 11 at Children’s Mercy Park.

PORTLAND, Ore. — FC Kansas City dropped a 3-0 road match to the Portland Thorns Wednesday night in National Women’s Soccer League play in Portland.

Christine Sinclair scored for Portland in the 15th and 75th minutes. Hayley Raso scored in the 32nd minute and assisted on Sinclair’s second goal.

Shots were even at 11 all, but the Thorns held a 6-4 advantage in total shots.

Adrianna Franch had the clean sheet in goal for Portland with four saves. Nichole Barnhart had three saves for FCKC.

Portland is 5-3-3, third place in the NWSL. Kansas City drops to 3-4-4, seventh place and four points out of fourth, the final playoff spot.

FC Kansas City hosts the Houston Dash at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Swope Soccer Village.
