HUTCHINSON — Newton pitcher Kyle Adkins fed off a spark ignited by Hutchinson coach Deron McCue in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Monarchs’ Wyatt Divis stood idly at the plate anticipating the next pitch from Adkins, but a delayed call by the umpire led to a strikeout, argued both by Divis and a charging McCue to the plate. After the dust settled in the heated exchange, McCue was tossed.

“It was exciting,” Adkins said. “I was trying to get my roommate on the mound (Noah Parson) that W. With that close call and the crowd getting pumped up, it amped me up a little bit. I wanted to get up there in the one-run game and close it out.”

An Adkins fist pump closed out the game after a strikeout to notch the 3-2 victory for the visiting Rebels. Monarchs' pitcher Jordan White had given up two runs through six innings before giving way to Gage Burns.

Hutchinson was holding on to a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth inning after an RBI by Divis and Josh Figueroa. Adkins also played his part on the offensive end with an RBI to tie it and Brandon Hall followed with a shallow sac fly to bring in the go-ahead run.

The win was Newton’s second straight. It also was Newton’s second straight win over Hutchinson, going back to a Rebel home win last week.

Parsons struck out five for the Rebels. Adkins struck out four. White struck out four for Hutchinson.

Lain had three hits for the Rebels. Isaiah Perez and Jace Snodgrass each had two hits.

THE QUICK HIT

THE TURNING POINT: Brandon Hall was able to bring in the go-ahead run on a shallow pop fly to break the 2-2 tie.

PAYS TO BE LUCKY: Monarchs’ Trevor Turner singled then stole second. After a hit, he sprinted for third and was nearly being picked off, but second baseman Perez dropped the ball on the tag. Turner then scored on a Divis sac fly to give Hutchinson a 1-0 lead.

NEXT: The Monarchs have a five-game home stand coming with the Cheney Diamond Dawgs set to come to Hutchinson Saturday at 7 p.m. Newton has a matchup against the Kansas Cougars at 6 p.m. today.
