In the rubber game of the Newton Post 2 Senior Knights against the Buhler Nationals in American Legion baseball Tuesday at Klein-Scott Field, Buhler’s pitching and hitting took over in a 6-0 win over the Knights.

Monday at Buhler, Newton won the first game 3-1 and lost the second game 8-4. (Stats were not available for those games).

Buhler used four pitchers to hold Newton to two hits. Buhler was held to six hits, but had most of them in the third and fifth innings to score.

“We were pitching by committee these last two games because we go to Omaha this weekend,” Buhler manager Bret Konrade said. “We used a lot of arms for just a couple of innings at a time. After that first game, we kind of woke up and started hitting the ball. Newton is a good team. They can hit the ball well.”

“Although we hit the ball hard, our mindset was a little off today,” Newton manager Evan Gilbert said. “Sometimes that happens after a long stretch of games like we had. Our pitchers have to do a better job of commanding their fastballs and letting their breaking stuff take care of itself. You get behind a good team of hitters, it’s hard to get on top of them.”

Newton gave up seven walks in the game.

Buhler’s Logan Sweet threw two innings of relief for the win. Starter Dawson Dreher went two innings, allowing a walk with two strikeouts. Jack Goertzen went two innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Jake Brown finished the game, allowing a hit with a walk and three strikeouts.

Four hits, a pair of walks and three wild pitches led to five runs for Buhler. Lawson Schultz had a two-run single. Brown hit an RBI double.

Jake Burkhart opened the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field.

Newton put the first two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but the next three batters all struck out to end the game.

Jacob Lindenmeyer broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fourth. Hunter Mapes had a bunt single for Newton.

Goertzen finished two for three hitting for Buhler. Jake Burkhart went two for two.

Josh Hansen took the loss for Newton. Matt Eldridge finished the game. Each had two strikeouts.

Buhler is 10-3 and opens play in the Omaha tourney Thursday. Newton falls to 4-7 and are off until Monday, when the Knights play at McPherson.

“We’re going to use this time off to get some practice in and get better,” Gilbert said. “I don’t want to sound all negative. We’ve had some positive things happen in this stretch. We just need to start playing more consistent.”
