MAIZE — The Newton Rebels finished the weekend 1-2 in Sunflower Collegiate League play with a loss to the 4-3 loss to the River City Lumberjacks Saturday and a twinbill split against the Kansas Cougars Sunday.

Newton won the first game against the Cougars 12-2 and lost the second game 9-8.

Against the Lumberjacks, Newton scored a run in the top of the fourth and added two runs in the fifth. The Lumberjacks scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Noah Parsons pitched eight innings for Newton, striking out nine. Kyle Adkins and Tyler Dunn each drove in a run.

In the first game against the Cougars, Newton scored three runs in the first inning, five in the third, a run in the fourth and three in the seventh.

The Cougars scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Isiah Perez had three hits and two RBIs for Newton. Adkins had two hits and two RBIs. Dunn had two hits. Jace Snodgrass drove in two runs.

Ron Lane pitched six innings with five strikeouts.

In the second game, the Cougars jumped ahead with a run in the first inning, three in the second, three in the fourth, a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth. Newton scored a run in the fourth and seventh in the top of the seventh.

Perez had two hits for Newton. Brandon Hall drove in three runs. Adkins drove in two.

Newton falls to 3-7, 5 1/2 games behind league leader Hutchinson. Newton hosts Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Friday at Klein-Scott Field.
