Halstead falls

to Independent

AUGUSTA — A comeback by the Halstead Dragon baseball team fell one run short in a 6-5 loss to Wichita Independent Friday morning in the Class 3A regional finals in Augusta.

Independent scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Halstead came back with three runs in the top of the third, but gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Halstead added a run in the fourth inning.

Halstead outhit Independent 6-4. Independent had two errors to one for Halstead.

Tony Morris had three hits with an RBI for Halstead. Luke Boline had two hits with an RBI for Independent.

Caden Springer struck out seven batters in four innings for Independent. Layke Heimerman had five strikeouts in three innings for Halstead. David Schulte added three strikeouts in three innings.

Independent improves to 21-1 and plays Thursday at the Class 3A state tournament in Manhattan. Halstead ends the season 15-8.

Four Bethel

golfers honored

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Four members of the Bethel College golf team were named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar-Athlete team for the 2016-17 season.

Players named to the team were Sam Bethoff, a junior from Winfield; Brian Krehbiel, a senior from Donnelson, Iowa; Kyle Regier, a senior from Whitewater; and Jaden Schmidt, a senior from Moundridge.

To be named to the team, a student must hold a grade-point-average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and have at least junior academic status.

Krehbiel, Regier and Schmidt have been selected for the second year. Bertholf is a first-time selection.

Wingnuts win

season opener

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts opened the season with a 6-3 win over the Salina Stockade Friday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Salina is a travel team that is replacing the Laredo Lemurs, which folded before the start of the season.

Salina scored in the top of the second on a C.J. Epperson sacrifice fly. Wichita came back with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Christian Stringer drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Matt Chavez hit a two-run home run. Wichita also scored a run on an error.

Jesse Baker hit a solo home run for Salina in the top of the fourth. Harrison Kain hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth.

Roche Woodard hit an RBI single for Salina in the eighth inning.

Alex Boshers threw six innings for the win, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Jesse Pratt and Austin Boyle each threw an inning. Seth Harvey tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save.

Sam Angnew-Wieland went 3 2-3 innings for the loss. Connor Bach and Skylar Hunter finished the game for the Stockade.

The two teams meet again at 5 p.m. today for a doubleheader, which includes the make-up of Thursday’s rain out.
