The Newton High School girls’ soccer team isn’t quite at full strength, but the Railers were still able to dominate Salina Central 6-0 Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Fischer Field.

Brookelynn Entz scored three goals with an assist to lead the Railers. Izzy Saenz added two goals with two assists.

“(The ankle) is getting better,” Entz said. “I had a whole week to rest it. It just felt good to get back out here. I’m itching to get back at it, but it’s best to rest as we go. Then get better when we get late into the season and into post-season. I want to be completely healed when I go to K-State.”

“We’re trying to overcome some injuries,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We came out and played really well today. We came out and possessed the ball and created opportunities. We tried to keep Brooke away from traffic, so she played out on the flanks. It was another clean sheet. We’re going to work now on getting people healed.”

Midfielder Aylin Torres went down with an injury late in the first half.

Entz scored twice in the first 24 minutes of play — once on a breakaway set up by an Izzy Saenz pass, the second time on a corner kick that was fed back to her.

Saenz scored on a break after she took the ball off a defender. Newton closed out the half with a goal by Bekah Tonn on a 25-yard shot set up by a Saenz back pass.

Saenz and Entz each added a goal in the second half to put things away.

Newton outshot Central 16-3. Newton won its fifth straight, improving to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Central drops to 1-8, 0-2 in league play.

“We’re ranked fourth in 5A, so that’s a good sign,” Entz said. “I don’t see us losing the rest of the year, so hopefully, we can keep that one loss and host all the way through the playoffs.”

Newton plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at McPherson.

“They are a quality squad,” Jantzi said. “Tomorrow is another recovery day. Thursday, we’ll try to come out fit.”

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton JV downed Salina Central 3-1. Abbi Jackson, Priscilla Araujo and Kati Jackson each scored a goal for Newton. The Railers play at 5 p.m. Thursday at McPherson.
