claims two wins

KEARNEY, Neb. — Newton High School graduate Cory Martens, a redshirt sophomore at Chadron State College, won two events and took second in a third Saturday at the Loper Invitational at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Martens won the discus in 53.10 meters (174-2), the hammer throw in 59.19 meters (194-2) and took second in the shot put in 16.39 meters (53-9 1/4).

All three marks met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks. Martens is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II in the discus, 16th in the hammer throw and 27th in the shot put. He leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in both the hammer throw and discus and is fourth in the shot put.

WINFIELD — Both the Bethel College men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to Southwestern 9-0 Saturday in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference dual meet in Winfield.

The Southwestern women received votes in the NAIA national poll.

Bethel dropped the first two doubles matches 9-7. All six singles matches were won by Southwestern in straight sets.

Southwestern is 13-4, 5-1 in the KCAC. Bethel drops to 5-6, 4-2 in KCAC play.

The Bethel men lost 9-7 at second doubles and 8-6 at third doubles. All six singles matches were won by Southwestern in straight sets.

The Southwestern men are 10-10, 3-3 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to 3-8, 2-4 in KCAC play.

Bethel hosts Bethany at 3 p.m. today. The Bethany men received votes in the NAIA poll. The Bethel women are tied for third in the KCAC standings with two matches remaining. A win in either of Bethel’s final two dual meets or a Kansas Wesleyan loss clinches a spot in the KCAC post-season tournament.

sweeps Inman

SEDGWICK — The Sedgwick Cardinal softball team claimed a sweep of Inman Monday in Heart of America League play in Sedgwick.

Sedgwick won the first game 18-6 in five innings on the 10-run rule and the second game 22-0 in three innings on the 15-run rule.

In the first game, Avery Blank tossed a two-hitter, striking out seven.

Sedgwick took control early with 12 runs in the first inning, adding six in the fourth inning.

Bailey Zerger drove in four runs for Sedgwick, followed by Hailey Hill with three and Melissa Juhnke with two. Juhnke and Ashton McGinn each had two hits.

In the second game, Sedgwick scored 19 runs in the first inning and three in the second.

Blank struck out four in two innings for the win. Ashton McGinn added a strikeout in one inning.

Gracie Mabry had three hits with four RBIs. Juhnke had two hits and two RBIs. Macie McGinn drove in three innings.

Sedgwick is 5-1 and hosts Hutchinson Trinity at 4:30 p.m. today.

sweeps Teutons

SEDGWICK — The Sedgwick High School baseball team split a doubleheader Monday against Inman in HOAL play in Sedgwick.

Sedgwick won the first game 15-5 and the second game 7-6.

The first game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule. Sedgwick led 10-1 after three innings and put things away with a four-run fourth inning. Inman scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Each team scored a run in the fifth.

Mason Lacey had three hits and four RBIs for Sedgwick. Marshall Rutschman drove in three runs. Kale Schroeder had three hits.

Kolton Lane had two hits for Inman. Walker Strange drove in two runs.

Andrew Hoffsommer pitched three innings with four strikeouts. Ethan Dewitt had three strikeouts for Inman. Kane Thimmesch added two strikeouts for the Teutons.

In the second game, Inman led 5-3 after three innings. Sedgwick scored a run in the bottom of the fourth. Each team scored a run in the sixth. Sedgwick scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Hooper Schroeder drove in two runs for Sedgwick. Connor Brown and Dewitt each drove in two runs for Inman. Brown had three hits for Inman.

Trey Bright struck out three batters for Sedgwick. Hooper Schroeder pitched three innings. Strange had four strikeouts in 3 1-3 innings for Inman. Brown struck out four in 2 1-3 innings.

Sedgwick is 5-1 overall and in HOAL play. Sedgwick hosts Haven today in non-league play.

Remington sweeps

Little River

LITTLE RIVER - The Remington High School baseball team split a pair of games Thursday against Little River.

Remington won the first game 11-0 and the second game 16-0.

The first game was called after six innings on the 10-run rule. Coleton Crisp struck out 15 batters, allowing just one hit.

Weston Sommers and Kyle Thiessen each drove in three runs for the Broncos. Chase Beckner and Weston Sommers each had two hits.

The second games was called after four innings on the 15-run rule.

Beckner struck out five and allowed one hit in four innings pitching.

Thiessen had two hits and four RBIs for the Broncos. Ty Hendrix drove in two runs.

Remington is 3-3 and plays today at Canton-Galva.
