MOUNDRIGE — The Moundridge High School track teams have four state qualifiers to replace for the 2017 season, but still have several state medalists returning.

The Moundridge girls were fourth in the Heart of America League last year, second in regionals and fourth at the Class 2A state meet. The boys were fourth in the league and eighth at state.

Among those that graduated were Peri Lange, who had 15 state medals to her credit and holds the Class 2A record in the 300-meter low hurdles; Joel Holloway, a state medalist in four events; Ashley Holler, who also competed in four events; and Rylie Dick, who competed at state in two events.

Top returnees include senior Parker Lange, who placed eighth at state in the triple jump and competed in the 4x400-meter relay; junior Damian Calderon, who competed at state in the 4x400- and 4x100-meter relays; junior Mason Dick, who competed at state in the javelin, discus, 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays; sophomre Jamya O’Quinn, who placed seventh at state in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the 200-meter dash, second in the 4x100-meter relay and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay; and sophomore Ellika Ptacek, who placed sixth in the 300-meter low hurdles, second in the 4x100-meter relay, sixth in the 4x400-meter relay and competed at state in the triple jump.

Hesston golfers

seek state return

HESSTON — With five returning players, the Hesston High School golf team will look to contend for another state title.

Hesston is coached by Grady Pauls, assisted by Brian Johnston.

The Swathers won the Central Kansas League title last year, taking second in the Class 3A state tournament, five strokes behind Fredonia.

Returning golfers include seniors Jordan Roth, Tanner Bachman and Trevor Koehn; junior Tyler Bachman; and sophomore Grant Brenneman.

Grant Brenneman tied for 16th at state last year for the team’s sole individual medal. Tanner Bachman was 23rd at state, one stroke off a medal. Roth was tied for 41st. Koehn was 46th. Tyler Bachman was 74th.

Hesston wrestlers

take honors

HESSTON — The Hesston High School wrestling team was named an All-Academic First Team selection by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.

Jake Wingfield was named honorable mention All-Academic for the season.

named to board

ATLANTA — Hesston native Katie Sowers was named to the nine-member advisory committee for USA Football.

Sowers is a scouting intern for the Atlanta Falcons. She is a former player in the Women’s Football Alliance and was a member of the 2013 International Federation of American Football Women’s World Championship team.

Sowers is a Hesston High School graduate. She played basketball at Hesston College and played basketball and competed in track at Goshen College.

She was a coach in the East-West Shrine game.

USA Football is the national governing body for the sport. It conducts courses and clinics for coaches, hosts competitions and selects national teams.
