boys take second

The Newton middle schools eighth-grade boys’ basketball A team placed second in the Pioneer League Tournament.

The Railers were seeded fifth entering the tournament and beat fourth seeded Salina Lakewood in the first round and first seeded Salina South in the semifinals.

Newton lost in the championship game to McPherson at McPherson.

“I was so proud of my boys,” Newton coach Logan Harpool said. “They did everything we asked at the end of the season. They got rid of all selfishness and played together. I'm going to miss them like crazy, but I'm excited to see what they will accomplish in high school.”

Newton finishes the season 7-9.

HV Hawks

host party

The Harvey County Hawks are hosting a watch party at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at Acapulco Mexican Restaurant, 217 West Broadway, as the Kansas Jayhawks take on the Oklahoma Sooners.

The event is a voucher night.

Police vs. Fire

game slated

WICHITA — The Wichita Force (police officers) will take on the Flying Monkeys (fire fighters) at the annual Police vs. Fire game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita.

The game precedes the Wichita Thunder game against the Toledo Walleye, which begins at 7:05 p.m.

Doors open for the games at 4:45 p.m. A ticket for the Thunder game is valid for both games.

Concert slated

for nationals

TOPEKA — Country artist Jerrod Niemann will perform a concert at the Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals drag races following the final round of professional qualifying May 20 at Heartland Park in Topeka.

Those with tickets for the races that day will not need to purchase separate tickets for the concert.

Niemann was born in Harper and raised in Liberal. He released three top 10 albums on the Billboard US Country chart, including Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury, which reached no. 1 in 2010. He also had 13 singles that charted, including two no. 1s.

The Menards NHRA Heartland Nations run from May 19 to 21 at Heartland Park and is part of the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Race Series.

Tickets for the races are available at NHRA.com/tickets and participating Menards locations beginning Monday.
