The Newton High School wrestling team closed out the dual meet season with a 51-25 win over Maize Thursday at Ravenscroft Gym.

Newton and Maize split the 10 matches on the mat 5-5, but Maize left four weight classes open for 24 Railer team points. Nine Newton senior wrestlers were honored before the meet.

“Having senior night, the last home dual and coming away with a 51-24 victory was a great way to cap off the season,” Newton coach Tommy Edgerson said. “We had some good things and some bad things. This will set us up well for regionals.”

Newton opened the day with Grant Treaster posting a third-period technical fall over Junior Camacho at 106 pounds. Newton didn’t get another win on the mat until 152 pounds, where Austin Gehring pinned Bradey VanSkike in the first period.

At 170 pounds, Bryan Cusick scored a 10-0 major decision over Maize’s Alex Recio. Wyatt Hendrickson’s 65 second pin over Jeffrey Oller at 182 pounds clinched the dual for Newton. Colby Beer pinned Maize’s Ethan Farney with 12 seconds remaining in the match at 195 pounds.

Wins by forfeit went to Logan Treaster at 120 pounds, Brody Roberson at 132 pounds, Kadin McBee at 145 pounds and Cyle Gautschi at 220 pounds.

At 113 pounds, Newton’s Sawyer Mock fell to Justin Watkins of Maize 7-0. At 126 pounds, Trevor Waldrop lost a 21-6 technical fall to Aidan Campbell in the third period. At 138 pounds, Newton’s Josh Edson lost by technical fall to Zac Grantham in the third period.

Maize’s first pin came at 160 pounds, when Talon Fitzsimmons pinned Dante Harper in the first period. AT heavyweight, Newton’s Brecken Wedel was pinned by Dakota Riggs in the first period.

Newton ends the season 6-5 in dual meets, 3-3 in AV-CTL I duals.

Newton competes at regionals Feb. 17 and 18 at Goddard High School. The tournament has a new format this year with 16 teams in a two-day tournament. The top eight finishers in each weight class advance to state Feb. 24 and 25 at Hartman Arena in Park City.

“It’s going to be rough,” Edgemon said. “We have a pretty tough regional. We have to get in the top eight instead of the top four. We have to get in the mindset that if we get out of that regional, we have a good chance of placing at state. We just need good technique. We have to get in the right mindset to put in a lot of hard work and get it done.”
