WINFIELD — The Bethel College men’s basketball team saw another chance to climb back in the KCAC post-season tournament race get away with a 113-105 loss in overtime to Southwestern Thursday in Winfield.

Bethel was outscored 16-8 in overtime after overcoming a 13-point deficit in the second half.

Bethel held a five-point lead in the final 1:28 of regulation, but was unable to hold it.

Bethel falls to 11-14 overall, 5-12 in KCAC play with four games remaining. Southwestern is 16-9, 9-8 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to two games out of eighth place, the final tourney spot.

It was the second time the Threshers reached triple figures in scoring this season, but it also was the most points given up since a 113-51 loss to Friends in 2014. The 218 points scored is the highest total in a Bethel game in recent history and may be a school record. Current results on line only go back to the 2003-04 season.

D.J. Wallace led Southwestern with 36 points, followed by Cameron Hunt with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Jacob Horsch scored 10 points.

Bethel was led by Deven Goodwin with 31 points, followed by Chase Banister with 23 points, Jacob Miller with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Austin Mitchell with 12 points.

Bethel was outscored 64-50 in the paint, but outscored the Moundbuilders 27-18 from 3-point range and 28-23 from the free throw line.

Bethel was outrebounded 48-37. The Threshers committed just five turnovers in 45 miniutes of play to 11 for Southwestern.

Down 11-9 in the first four minutes of play, Bethel gave up a 5-0 run. Bethel got back within one on a Goodwin shot with 12:15 left in the first half. Bethel took a 25-23 lead on a Banister trey. Bethel trailed by as many as seven late in the half. A Mitchell shot with five seconds left in the half got Bethel back within five, 47-42, at intermission.

Bethel was 14 of 36 shooting in the first half, while Southwestern was 19 of 31.

The Threshers opened the second half with a Goodwin trey, but then gave up an 11-2 run to trail by 11. The Threshers trailed by as many as 13 in the second half but rallied back to tie the game 78-78 on a Mitchell shot with 5:24 left in regulation. Bethel took a 91-88 lead on a Bannister trey with 1:51 to play, followed by a pair of Mitchell free throws 23 seconds later.

A Hunt shot with 1:20 to play got the Moundbuilders back within three. Banister hit one of two free throws a second later, followed by one of two free throws for Hunt. Southwestern rebounded the miss.

With 58 seconds left in regulation, Miller hit one of two free throws. Wallace was fouled on the miss, hitting two free throws to get Southwestern to within two.

With 35.6 seconds to play, Terrell Marshall hit two free throws for Bethel, followed by a Hunt layup 8.3 seconds later. Bethel turned over the ball on the inbounds, setting up a Barrington Hunter layup with 20.9 seconds to play.

Bethel missed its first two shots in overtime, allowing a 5-0 Southwestern run. The Moundbuilders led by as many as eight in the extra period. Bethel never got closer than six in the final minute.

Bethel hosts Bethany at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Gym. Bethany is 11-15, 8-9 in KCAC play, after a 113-104 loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan in Lindsborg. Bethel won the first meeting between the two teams 85-84 earlier this season in Lindsborg.
