The Newton High School boys’ soccer team topped Maize South 4-2 Tuesday at Fischer Field in non-league play.

The game was tied 2-2 at the half. Carlos Cornejo and Anthony Velazco each added a goal in the second half to put the Railers in front.

Cornejo finished the game with three goals. Jose Rojas and Brayden Cornejo each had an assist in the first half.

Maize South falls to 7-7-1. Newton improves to 9-4-2 and closes out the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Fischer Field against Hutchinson.

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity topped Maize South 1-0. Deven Wilson scored the goal with an assist from Chance Ores. The junior varsity ends the season at 5 p.m. Thursday against Hutchinson.

LA JUNTA, Colo. — The Hesston College volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday in La Junta.

Hesston fell to host Otero Junior College 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 20-15, 15-9; and the Adams State junior varsity 25-7, 25-11, 25-14.

Hesston is 11-12 and hosts Highland Community College at 6:30 p.m. today.

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s soccer team split a pair of recent games.

Saturday in Concordia, Hesston fell to Cloud County Community College 8-0.

James Ndubueze and Marcos Gomes each scored two goals with two assists. Leo Silva Santiago added two goals. Ryan Medilah scored a goal with two assists. Rafael Alkmin scored a goal.

Hesston was outshot 17-0. Luke Hertzler had nine saves in goal for Hesston.

Monday at home, Hesston downed the Central Christian College junior varsity 5-2. Scoring details were not reported.

Hesston is 4-10-1 and hosts Pratt Community College at 7 p.m. Thursday.

HC women fall

to Barton CC

GREAT BEND — The Hesston College women’s soccer team fell to Barton Community College 4-2 Thursday in Great Bend.

Barton scored all four goals in the second half to avenge a 4-1 loss to Hesston earlier this season.

Maddison Schofield scored three goals with an assist for Barton. Megan Martinez added a goal. Adriana Reyes, Kirsty Ashworth, Analia Torres and Amber Miller each added an assist.

Mika Matsuda scored both goals for Hesston.

The Larks were outshot 21-8. Cassidy Bontrager had seven saves for Hesston. Alexandra Capalbo had two saves for Barton.

Hesston is 11-4 and hosts Pratt Community College at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Rumble sent

to Wichita

WICHITA — Defenseman Chris Rumble was assigned to the Wichita Thunder by the Binghampton Senators of the American Hockey League.

Rumble, 26, is a native of Chesapeake, Va. He is a third-year pro with 11 goals and 30 assists 72 games. He spent the last two seasons with Evansville of the ECHL. He played three years at Canisius College, scoring 14 goals with 32 assists in 84 games. Rumble helped lead Canisius to the Atlantic Hockey Association championship game as a sophomore.

Wichita also added forward Gerrard Grant from the reserve list and placed forwards Ian Lowe and Triston Grant on the reserve list.
