HESSTON — The Hesston High School volleyball team ended the regular season with a pair of wins Tuesday at home in non-league play.

Hesston topped the Wichita Defenders home school team 25-21, 25-12; and Lyons 25-21, 25-8. The Defenders downed Lyons 21-25, 25-15, 25-20.

“Concordia was originally going to be part of this triangular, but they discovered over the weekend that they had over-scheduled and were at their maximum number of matches already,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We scrambled to find another team and Lyons was able to make it work to take their place. The Defenders are a strong group with some talented players, and we struggled at the start of the first set to adjust to their hitters, and our passing on serve receive wasn’t as sharp as it needed to be. We battled through the first set, kept our composure to finish it out, and then played much better from the start in the second.

“After recognizing our eight senior players and senior manager, we played Lyons for the third time this season. Every match we have had with them has had one set that was close and one where we dominated, and tonight was no exception. After we started out with an 8-1 lead, Lyons came back with several runs and led 16-14, before we regrouped and pulled back ahead to finish out the set. In the second set, we again started out with a lead at 13-1, and allowed them to score only two points on their serve the whole set. These were good matches for us to have to focus and stay sharp, and gives us some good momentum to build on as we look forward to a tough sub-state on Saturday.”

Hesston improves to 31-6 and plays in the Class 3A sub-state tournament Saturday in Beloit. The pairings are expected to be set later today.
