WICHITA — A pair of Newton High School golfers found the going a little tough Monday in the Class 5A state tournament at the Crestview Country Club in Wichita.

Junior Kit Kingsley finished tied for 44th at 113, 13 strokes off a medal. Senior Katie Smet was 82nd at 142. There were 89 golfers in the field.

“The course was extremely difficult today,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “Only three girls in the 88 person field were able to break 90. Katie had a very difficult first nine. She started on number 10 and finished the back at 82. She settled down on the front nine, shaving 22 strokes and shooting 60. Kit wasn't able to keep her driver in play off the tee early in her round. Both girls struggled around the greens with chipping and putting. Kit hit 4-iron most of her second nine (the front) and kept the ball in play better. She was still dealing with the pain from a broken finger and seemed a little off with her grip and timing during the round. Katie is a senior and will be missed next year. Kit is a junior and is motivated to continue to improve during the off-season.”

Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won the team title with a 365, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas at 377 and St. James Academy at 382.

Emma Whitaker of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel was the top medalist with a six-over par 78, followed by Caroline Klemp of St. James Academy at 80 and Tatum King of St. Thomas Aquinas at 84.
