BURRTON —

Carol Kirk already knows almost everyone from the town of Burrton, but during the course of the next few weeks, she will be making sure to meet anyone she doesn’t know and talk to as many Burrton residents as she can.

She is helping spearhead an effort to create a Burrton Historical Museum — a project she approached the city commission seeking support for.

And while Kirk said the council was generally supportive of the project, the council was not ready to give financial support.

“They said we should find out what kind of support there is in the community,” Kirk said. “So the first thing we have to do is find out if people want it or not.”

Those who have been working on the project have a location in mind — a building which will need some renovation if the museum is to become a reality.

Kirk said in addition to finding out how much support for the project there is in the community, there is a message to deliver.

“We will need donated items to make this work,” Kirk said. “Those old things that sit in the attic and you don’t know what to do with, those are the things we will need for displays.”

The museum would be more than simply a collection of old stuff, however. It would be a place for people to learn about the history of the town — and other things as well.

“It would be a place where people could do research,” Kirk said. “Families who have moved away could come back and research the history of their family.”
