A group of 500 Mennonite Brethren youth will gather today through Sunday at Newton High School for a weekend concert and retreat.

In addition, a concert is planned as part of the conference at 8 p.m. Saturday, featuring Christian musicians: The Afters, Abandon Kansas, and Dave Thompson. The public also is invited to the concert. Tickets are $10 at the door, with no advance purchase or group discounts available.

During the weekend, high school students at the conference will take part in Bible teaching sessions and a variety of other activities at the high school and throughout Newton.

Free-time activity options on Saturday afternoon include sports tournaments, shopping downtown, a service project at Harvey County Homeless Shelter, bowling and movies.

The conference is hosted jointly by Koerner Heights Church of the Mennonite Brethren and Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church and is sponsored by the Southern District Conference of Mennonite Brethren churches, including congregations in Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. The youth conference is believed to be the largest annual gathering of Mennonite Brethren in North America.

As part of the conference, Koerner Heights Church and Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church will have their Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Newton High School with the conference attendees, musicians and guest speaker.
