Hall’s Chapel
AME Church

Sunday
• Hall’s Chapel AME Church will celebrate 109 years of service to the Newton community at 3 p..m. Sunday at the church, 719 E. 11th St.
The speaker for the service will be the Rev. Carieta Grizzell of Grant Chapel A.M.E in Wichita.
The theme for the program is “We overcome the trials of life through the light of God.”
The scripture for the day will come from Psalm 36:9 — “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.”
The celebration is open to the public.

Highland Trinity
United Church
of Christ

Sunday
• Highland Trinity United Church of Christ is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the constuction of its present church building at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
The church was dedicated in August 1910. The church was organized in the 1800s and met a half mile north of its present location in a building that also housed District 53 school and served as a meeting place for the local Grange.
The south addition of the present building was added in the 1960s, and a foyer was constructed on the west end about 10 years ago.
Many of the German settlers met in the church, with its services held in the German language, until about 1915, when they switched the services to all English.
Many local families still recognize Highland as its original family church.
All are welcome to join the church at its rededication ceremony.
A reception will follow the service.

Zion Lutheran Church

Monday
• The Prayer Shawl Ministry group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 225 S. Poplar.
• Active Seniors will meet at noon Monday for a potluck dinner.
Thursday
• Ladies Aid members will meet at 1:30 p.m.  Thursday at the church.  Hostess will be Ann Wiederstein. Devotions and topic will be presented by Ruth Karter.

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church

Sunday
• Sunday morning worship with Eucharist will be at 10:15 a.m. A nursery will be provided. This Sunday there also wll be a blessing of the backpacks for students and teachers returning to school.
Monday
• The Monday evening women’s book club, which meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the lounge, is reading “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.”
Tuesday
• The Payee Program will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Parish Hall.
Wednesday
• The Wednesday evening prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel.
• Morning Glories Prayer Circle will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays in the lounge.
The public is welcome.

First Christian Church

• Lydia Group from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the commons room at Kansas Christian Home. Joyce Lang will present the devotion.
Thursday
• Miriam Group will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday. Elizabeth Nash will present the lesson as well as the devotion.
• Martha Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at 2516 Essex Heights Road in Halstead. Andrea Hall will present the lesson.

First Presbyterian Church

Saturday
• The First Presbyterian young adult Sunday school class will leave Saturday morning on a mission trip to homeless shelters in Dallas, where they will work for several days.
Sunday
•  Theworship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Jim Anderson will deliver the sermon. Music will be provided by Peg Zizer.
The church will provide a nursery for all morning services. It will have Sunday school classes for all ages from 9:15 to 10:10 a.m. Sunday. Fellowship time will be from 10:10 to 10:30 a.m. in the narthex.
• From 2 to 4 p.m., a birthday party for Kay Enz will be in fellowship hall.
Tuesday
• The Commmunity Life committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
• The building and grounds committee and the staff relations committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Wednesday
• The chancel choir will rehearse at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the choir loft.
• The Christian education committee will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the parlor.
• The finance and mission committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
• At 8:15, The worship and music committee will meet at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Friday
• The First Presbyterian women and friends will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Friday at the BreadBasket.

St. Luke
Presbyterian

Sunday
• Larry Sadowski will give a presentation called “The Best Revolution” during the 10:30 a.m. worship service at St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Newton. He will use John 3:16-17 as his scripture reference: “The truth is the world would always prefer a rebel oven a revolutionary ...”
Dr. Peggy Elliott has three more weeks of her “Spiritual Gifts Assessment” class at 8:30 a.m.
There also will be a time of fellowship at 9:30 a.m., with a continental breakfast.
The church is at 808 E. Sixth St.
Children’s Church, for those ages 3 years old to third grade, and nursery care for children birth through 3 years old during the service and during Sunday school.
