Newton Community Theatre announces there will be three musical productions this summer.
The summer will start off with a week-long children’s theater camp for students entering kindergarten and finishing up sixth grade, during the week of June 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. Students will be lead in a production of “The Pied Piper — the Musical,” musical adaptation by Vera Morris and Bill Francoeur. The musical will be under the stage direction of Cassandra Conley and the music direction of Christopher Shaw. The week will conclude with a performance on June 6 at Newton High School. Registration forms can be found at www.newtoncommunitytheatre.org and are due by May 12.For adults, Newton Community Theatre will produce “The Last Five Years.” The show will be presented as a dinner theater on June 20 and 21 at Trinity United Methodist Church. “The Last Five Years,” written by Jason Robert Brown, is a contemporary song-cycle musical that chronicles the five-year life of a marriage between a writer and an actress, from meeting to break-up — or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. Conley and Shaw will direct the show. The family production this year will be the musical “Honk!.” Written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, “Honk!” is the story of Ugly, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, Ugly must find his way home. Along his rollicking and harrowing journey, he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms.Directing the show will be Megan Tyner with music direction by Donna Woolery. Performances will be July 31, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 at Newton High School.Newton Community Theatre will have a second day of auditions from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday in the NHS auditorium. Bring a prepared song. Auditions are for “Honk!” (performance dates July 31 through Aug. 2) and for “The Last Five Years” (performance dates June 20 and 21).
