The U.S. Postmaster General John Potter is proposing eliminating Saturday delivery.

Initially, I was reluctant to see a reduction from the six-day delivery week.

He says mail volume has reduced dramatically.

I wish they would go one step further: close down on Mondays, too. That would eliminate the “holiday pay” on the multitude of Mondays in which their employees already are off.

If postal vehicles weren’t used from Friday afternoon ‘til Tuesday morning, it would save a lot of fuel and postal office buildings wouldn’t need heating or cooling.

Plush health and retiree benefits must be scaled back to save money. Lastly, advertising campaigns by the Postal Service on television are unnecessary.

If they would concentrate on “necessities,” they will survive.

— Sincerely,

James A. Marples,
