1. Enjoy free activities
at Newton Public Library

Take your children to free programs given in air-conditioned coolness this summer at Newton Public Library. Upcoming programs at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays include juggler Jason Huneke July 14, ventriloquist Kevin Horner on July 21 and Barnyard Puppet Theatre on July 28.

2. Cats are free at
local humane society

Adopt a free cat at the Caring Hands Humane Society. The society has a number of cats available for adoption, and they’re free. In addition, kittens may be adopted for $17.76 for a limited time. For more information, visit www.caringhandshs.org, where there are photos of adoptable pets, or call the society at 283-0839.

3. Discuss emergency
situations with pastor

Talk to your pastor and other members of your church congregation about crisis planning. Recent incidents of shootings in churches have put the spotlight on the need for increased security in religious centers. Crisis teams also can address issues of natural disasters and medical emergencies.

4. Take care of your skin in the sun

The sun provides our bodies with much-needed vitamin D. But, too much sun can lead to burning and other skin damage. Three kinds of ultraviolet rays come from our sun — UVA, UVB, UVC. The majority of our sun exposure (and tanning beds) is UVA, which passes right through the earth’s protective ozone layer. UVA can cause skin aging and wrinkling and contributes to skin cancers. UVB rays are partially absorbed by the ozone layer, but some gets through and are thought to cause cataracts, and immune system damage and skin cancers. UVC rays are the most dangerous but don’t reach the earth.
What to do: minimize exposure during the 10 to 14 hours of the day. Wear protective clothing, hat & sunglasses. Use sunscreen with UVA & UVB – SPF 15 or more. Reapply every 30 minutes.

5. Register to vote
for primary election

If you aren’t already registered to vote, the deadline to participate in upcoming elections is fast approaching. The last day to register to vote in the Aug. 3 primary election is July 19. If you miss that deadline, you can still register for the November election through October.
