HESSTON — Edward R. C. Classen, 87, passed away Friday (Nov. 13, 2009) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
He was born on March 8, 1922, in Meade, the son of Peter L. and Sarah Reimer Classen.
He had worked as a truck driver with King Construction Co. for more than 30 years. He was a member of Koerner Heights Mennonite Brethren Church in Newton and had volunteered at Victory in the Valley in Wichita for many years.
On July 30, 1944, he married Sara Reimer. She passed away on April 2, 2006.
He is survived by his three children: Regina Yoder of Newton, Marjorie Sommerfeld and husband Lyle of Andover, and Dale Classen and wife Anita of Salem, Ore.; two brothers, Levi Classen and Clarence Classen; five sisters; Agnes Schertz, Dora Ehmann, Alvera Thiessen and Evelyn Fisher; 12 grandchildren, December and Jerry Worthington, Terry and Melanie Yoder, Larissa Yoder, Kel Sommerfeld, Kimberly and Gene Paulsen, Tyson Sommerfeld, Melinda and Mark Dunford, and Brian Classen; and 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, Jonny and David Worthington, Madeline and Marianna Yoder, Sierra Collins, and Kate, Allie and Nicholas Paulsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Katherine (Isaac) Classen; four brothers, Henry Classen, Dr. Peter Classen, Harold Classen and Jake Classen; and one sister, Elizabeth Loewen. His sister, Linda Goossen, passed away Nov. 15.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston with Chaplain Bev Baumgartner officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
A private family graveside services will be held in Hesston Cemetery in Hesston.
