Gladys A. Jewell

Gladys A. Jewell, 93, of Peabody, died Friday (May 9, 2008) at St. Joseph Village in Manhattan.

She was born Dec. 8, 1914, near Clayton, N.M., the daughter of Harry A. and Grace Selvy. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to farm near Burns. She graduated from Burns High School and earned an associate’s degree from El Dorado Junior College in 1934.

She was a homemaker and was employed at Baker Furniture Store in Peabody until retirement. She was a member of Peabody First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Sorosis Club and the Peabody Senior Center.

Gladys was united in marriage to Paul W. Jewell on Sept. 3, 1937, in Elton, Md. They farmed in the Peabody/Burns area throughout their married life. He preceded her in death in 1992.

She is survived by two sons, Rex Jewell and wife, Berneda, of Manhattan and Robert Jewell and wife, Barbara, of Olathe; sisters, Vera London and Gaila Henry, both of Wichita, Grace Sebert of Raymore, Mo., and Verda Stoskopf of El Dorado; five grandchildren, Jona Neufeld and husband, Darin, of Goodland, Shera Sims and husband, Trent Vu, of Harrisonville, Mo., Jennifer Palmgren and husband, Bryce, of Manhattan, Michael Jewell of Montgomery, Ala., and Chad Jewell of Manhattan; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Austin and Megan Neufeld, and Kendal and Rachel Palmgren.

She also was preceded in death by an infant son, Arthur A. Jewell; two daughters, Janet K. Sims and Janell G. Jewell; her parents; two brothers; and a sister.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Peabody United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Ragland officiating.

Burial will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, Peabody Senior Center or St. Joseph Village in Manhattan in care of the funeral home.
