OVERLAND PARK —

Bernice Whelan, 79, died Thursday (May 8, 2008) at the Village Shalom in Overland Park.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1928, in Dodge City to Albert and Edna (Buhrle) Kregar.

On Aug. 2, 1948, she married Cecil Whelan. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1984.

Bernice moved to Newton in 1967 from Great Bend. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Newton. Bernice was a homemaker and also worked as a legal secretary and food demonstrator at Dillons.

She toll painted for many years and also loved to be outside gardening and doing yard work with her husband. Bernice greatly looked forward to spending time with her loving family and many friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Yvette Stark of Overland Park; son, Michael Whelan of Great Bend; sister, Lucille Hendrickson of Liberal; sister, Ruth Pittel of Hollister, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Machaela Whelan, Kinnat Whelan and Kyra Stark.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Dean Von Stroh presiding. The casket will be open prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Kansas City Hospice or The American Cancer Society in care of Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main St., Newton, KS 67114.
