JoAnne Gomez, 56, of Newton, died Friday (Feb. 5, 2010) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born on Oct. 14, 1953, in Camp Chaffee, Ark., the daughter of Martin and Josepha Edelman Hoyt Sr. She graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in Fort Smith, Ark.

JoAnne married Robert F. Gomez on Oct. 15, 1971, in Fort Smith. JoAnne and Robert moved from Fort Smith to Kansas, settling in Newton in 1988. For the last 25 years, she operated a day-care center out of her home.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of the home; her children, Sherry Fuller of Indianola, Iowa, Rob Gomez of Newton, Kristina Gomez of Newton, Jamie Gomez of Newton, Kelly Gomez of Overland Park, Cory Gomez of Newton and Jacy Gomez of the home; a brother, Martin Hoyt Jr. of Lavaca, Ark.; and six grandchildren, Parker Arellano, Colby Gomez, Avery Hinojos, Jackson Gomez, Nikko Hinojos and Madyson Gomez.

JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Private family funeral services will be later with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with Caring Hands Humane Society, with contributions sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
