Each year, countless people die in preventable outdoor recreation-related accidents.
In an effort to jumpstart the summer and get recreation safety fresh in everyone’s mind, Safe Kids Marion County, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and local law enforcement and emergency response agencies have planned a fun day for families on the first day of National Safe Boating Week. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p..m. May 17 at Cottonwood Point Campground at Marion Reservoir.There will be bicycle relays. Children are welcome to bring their own bikes.The Corps’ mascot, Bobber the Water Safety Dog, will make an appearance. Bobber will show the fun side of water safety. There will be a children’s aid station for families to visit and take home a souvenir by local law enforcement agencies.Attendees can bring their boats out to any of the boat ramps for free inspections by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.Also, car seat checks will be available and local firefighters will bring a fire truck to show children a fire hose in action.The first 500 people will get a free lunch provide by community support. Families that take part in the activities will have the chance to win a free bicycle, and other giveaways will be handed out to participants.
