NEWTON —

Republican Don Schroeder will advance to the general election to take on Democrat Max Smith of Moundridge in the general election for the Kansas House of Representative 74th District seat.

Schroeder received 867 votes in Harvey County, while Mitch Powell had 472.

District-wide, which includes parts of Harvey and McPherson counties, Schroeder received a total of 1,452 votes to Powell’s 627.

On the Democratic ticket, Smith received 227 votes.

After going through surgery Tuesday morning for prostate cancer, Schroeder was a little tired but upbeat when hearing the primary election results.

Schroeder said he should be out of the hospital on Thursday and will take it easy for a couple of weeks.

“The doctors say the outlook is good, the cancer was caught early on,” he said. “This shouldn’t be a long recovery time.”

In the downtime, Schroeder will be preparing for the next phase of campaigning, against Smith in the Nov. 4 general election.

He said he looks forward to getting back on the campaign trail and the surgery won’t slow him down much.

Schroeder’s first term as a representative to the House will expire at the end of this year. The Nov. 4 election will determine who will take the House seat on the second Tuesday of January.

“I appreciate the confidence shown by my friends with their votes,” he said. “It’s been an honor to serve the 74th House District for the past two years. I hope I can continue to serve the residents of Harvey and McPherson counties for another term.”

Schroeder thanked Powell for running a clean campaign and wished him well in the future.

Powell said he was disappointed with the voter turnout for the primary election.

In Harvey County, about 20 percent of all registered voters made it to the polls. For the Republicans, about 32 percent of the voters cast their votes.

“It’s been a lot of fun, and I wish (Schroeder) the best in the November general election,” Powell said. “I hope the issues brought forward during my campaign can be properly addressed by government.”
