A horse running at large resulted in the closure of Interstate 135 in Harvey County for about half an hour during rush-hour traffic Wednesday.
The animal was one of two stray horses that were being cared for by a local vet.
Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said he believed the horses, which were in poor physical condition, were abandoned by their owner in the Halstead area. The horses ran at large for days before they were captured.
The mare escaped again Wednesday.
Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and highway patrol troopers tried throughout the day to catch the horse.
The vet advised against tranquilization because the horse’s adrenaline might neutralize the effects or it could kill the horse.
Because of the horse’s overall health and condition after running in the heat and the safety of the driving public, the decision was made to put the horse down.
The other horse still is in the custody of the sheriff’s department and needs a home. State statute may require the county to auction the horse.
