Students in Ray Olais’ Drawing and Painting II class on Tuesday were busy chattering away and working on their projects, surrounded by artwork painted on ceiling tiles above their heads and work of former students.
Four of the Newton High School students in this class recently were given awards through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional contest. The recognition is through the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, according to www.artandwriting.org. Those who receive Gold Keys on the regional level can compete at the national level.
“I was really excited,” Olais said about the students getting recognized. “They did really well this year.”
Local students receiving awards are:

  • Carl Folkerts, a junior, one Gold Key, two Silver Keys and an honorable mention.
  • Danielle Brockman, a senior, with one Gold Key and one honorable mention.
