The annual Halloween Safe Walk will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Newton, as Main Street will be lined with local businesses offering kids a safe and fun environment to trick ’or’ treat.

This is the 15th year the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau has hosted the event. The Halloween Safe Walk began with the idea of providing a secure location where children could trick-or-treat freely and safely, without the concern of traffic and to allow trick-or-treating from a reliable source, Billi Jo Wilson with the Chamber said.

Main Street traffic will be closed from Fifth Street to Seventh streets for the event, in order to allow children to safely traverse the streets.

Businesses participating should plan on treats for about 1,500 children to ensure there is plenty of candy to go around.

“Any business is welcome to participate in this event,” Wilson said. “Some businesses in Newton provide trick-or-treating, but for some, coming to Main Street offers them an opportunity to interact with parents and children of the community in a unique ‘fashion’ and bring awareness to their business and services.”

Anyone with questions or who would like to participate by handing out candy can contact Wilson at the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce at 283-2560.
