Newton High School will celebrate 125 years in October with a weekend of art, golf, music and football.
The Railer 125 event, which is set for Oct. 1 and 2, will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first commencement at NHS.
Anyone who attended school in Newton is encouraged to visit his or her old school during the All Schools Open House as several of the Newton schools have undergone extensive renovations during the last few years.
The NHS Booster Club will sponsor a tailgate party before the Newton vs. Campus game on Oct. 1. Admission to the tailgate is free, but the Boosters will sell hamburgers and brats to benefit Newton athletics. The tailgate will begin at 5 p.m. at the band shell in athletic park and end at 7 p.m. prior to the start of the football game. There will be tables set up for alumni by year of graduation.
The event will culminate on Oct. 2 with  ribbon cutting and dedication of the new NHS addition.
Event organizers are accepting entries now for the weekend’s celebration.
Organizers of the Alumni Art Show are accepting artwork for a show that will run for the month of October.
Artists have until the end of August to commit to the art show.
Ray Olais, organizer, said he has grads from the 1950s to the present who have expressed interest in showing their art at the show at the Carriage Factory Gallery. Some of those artists are well-known artists, including Max Penner and Brad Sneed.
The show is open to all media, although Olais said most of the art that has been submitted is 2-D.
Admission to the exhibit, which opens on homecoming weekend, will be free, and the exhibit is open to the public.
Organizers also hope to organize a benefit auction during the show with donations from alumni artists. The auction is set for 3 p.m. Oct. 2.
For more information on the show, contact Ray
Olais, art teacher at the high school, at 284-6280, ext. 2417,  or e-mail him at rolais@newton.k12.ks.us or contact Joe Loganbill, Carriage Factory Gallery director, at 284-
2749 or e-mail him at director@carriagefactoryartgallery.com.
Entrees also are being accepted for a four-person scramble golf tournament on Oct. 1, which will benefit the Railer 125 Challenge Fund.
The event starts at 10 a.m. at Sand Creek Station.
The cost is $125 per person and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, beverages and green fees.
Interested golfers can sign up on the event’s Web site at www.railer125.com. Credit card payments will be accepted through PayPal.
The deadline to register for the scramble is Sept. 27.
