Nine people have filed with the Harvey County clerk’s office to run for seats in the upcoming city and school board elections.
There are 30 positions open in the county this spring. Three people have filed for election to Newton USD 373’s board of education — Renee Erickson and Tim Hodge have joined Randy Zohn on the ballot. There are three seats up for election — seats currently held by Pat Tongish, Phebia Williams and Barbara Bunting. Two have filed for seats on the Newton City Commission. Those who have filed are incumbents Willis Heck and Ken Hall. There are three seats up for election — two four-year terms and one two-year term. In Burrton, Rodney E. Redinger has filed for Burrton City Council. Kevin Pyle has filed for re-election as Halstead mayor, while Keith Dehaven has filed for re-election as Sedgwick mayor. Local races for city officials and board of education members will be conducted this spring. The filing deadline is noon on Jan. 27 for prospective candidates. Other elections in Harvey County will include three city council positions in North Newton; three city council positions, mayor and four board of education positions in Halstead; two city council positions and three board of education positions in Sedgwick; three board of education positions, two council positions and mayor of Hesston; and three board of education positions in Burrton.If needed, a primary election will be on March 3. The general election will be on April 7.
