NEWTON —

The numbers don’t add up — one driver (sort of), one car and two accidents. It almost sounds like the build up to a bad joke, but it landed one woman in the hospital Friday afternoon.

A female driver, which has not yet been identified pending the filing of an official police report, got out of her car in the parking lot of Dollar General in the 300 block of North main.

She intended to leave the car idle, however, the car was not fully in park when the driver left the vehicle.

The car started to roll. According to eyewitness reports, she tried to stop the car by reaching through the driver’s side window. She fell to the ground, which is considered the first accident by the Newton Police Department.

Officers said it was unclear if the car rolled over it’s former driver. She was taken to Newton Medical Center by Newton Fire/EMS as a precaution.

The car continued to roll — leaving the parking lot, crossing fourth street and entering the railroad right of way.

The vehicle crossed one set of railroad tracks, striking a railroad device used to signal the end of the tracks for accident number two, before finally getting stopped a few hundred feet from where it’s unguided journey began.

Newton Police and Newton Fire/EMS both reported to the scene of the accident.
