NEWTON —
The driver of a car that found its way, unguided, into the Burlington-Northern right of way Friday afternoon has been identified.
According to the official police report, Eleanor L. Hilton, 68, of North Newton got out of her 1999 Saturn in the parking lot of Dollar General after a car driven by Margaret J. Jones, 57, of Newton backed into the Saturn. Hilton exited the vehicle; however, the car was not fully in park when the driver left the vehicle. The car started to roll. According to eyewitness reports, she tried to stop the car by reaching through the driver’s side window. She fell to the ground, which is considered the an injury accident by the Newton Police Department. Officers said it was unclear if the car rolled over its former driver. She was taken to Newton Medical Center by Newton fire/EMS as a precaution. The car continued to roll, leaving the parking lot, crossing Fourth Street and entering the railroad right of way. The vehicle crossed one set of railroad tracks, striking a railroad device used to signal the end of the tracks for accident number two of its unguided journey, before finally getting stopped a few hundred feet from where its trek began.
