Lois Neace, LSCSW (Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker), RPT-S, has been approved to be a registered play therapist supervisor (RPT-S) by the Association for Play Therapy, the national organization that promotes quality play therapy as a treatment modality for children.
Neace practices primarily at the Prairie View Inc. east and west locations in Wichita. Prairie View also has a location in Newton, at 1901 E. First St. Patients in Newton have access to Neace’s services.
The credential not only recognizes Neace as a registered play therapist supervisor, but also as a registered play therapist.
The Association of Play Therapy defines play therapy as “a form of counseling (or psychotherapy) by which licensed mental- health professionals use play-based models and techniques to better communicate with and help clients, especially children, achieve optimal mental health.”
Neace has found play therapy to be a non-intimidating way to engage children in the therapeutic process.
“The toys represent the children’s words,” she said in a news release. “When the children play, they are processing their thoughts and feelings. Children love play therapy, and it provides a treatment modality without stigma.”
As a supervisor, Neace will meet with the supervisee in person, discuss a specific case, review a tape of a therapy session and make recommendations. The supervision can be done individually or with a group of supervisees.
The application process involved documenting specific kinds of clinical experience and education that occurred during the years. Neace also was required to submit copies of her master’s level and clinical licenses, transcripts from two universities, course syllabi to document certain types of training at the graduate level, copies of continuing education training from approved play therapy centers and signatures from four supervisors to document specific clinical experience and supervision of the clinical experience.
Now Neace’s training and experience with the treatment of children is formally recognized, the credential will help with building credibility and trust, she said, because many parents, judges and other professionals who provide services to children recognize the credential.
“I am also in a position to help other clinicians and graduate-level students improve their techniques working with children, adolescents and families,” she said. “I’m very excited to have this credential.”
Neace joins Prairie View colleague Marlene Ewert, LCMFT (Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist), RPT-S, as a Registered Play Therapist and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Neace is the only registered play therapist at Prairie View’s Wichita offices. Prairie View employs two other Registered Play Therapists: Sara Kopper, LSCSW, RPT, and Ruth Porisch, LSCSW, RPT.
Prairie View is a faith-based, private behavioral and mental health services provider, offering a complete range of behavioral and psychiatric services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults, as well as consultation services to businesses and organizations. In addition to the main campus, including outpatient offices and a psychiatric hospital in Newton, Prairie View has outpatient locations in Hillsboro, Hutchinson, McPherson and Wichita.
