Hutchinson Credit Union in Newton is teaming up with the Newton Toy-A-Thon to offer a “Shopping Cart Fashion Show.”

The Toy-A-Thon committee and the credit union are challenging groups and companies in Newton to decorate shopping carts with a Christmas theme. They’re looking for the most unique, colorful and fun shopping cart in town.

All donations will benefit the Salvation Army.

Teams can pick up a shopping cart between 10 and 11 a.m. Friday at the north entrance of Newton’s Wal-Mart Supercenter. An entry form and entry fee of $30 must be turned in at that time or prior to that.

Decorated carts must be turned in by 7 a.m. Dec. 1 at Wal-Mart.

All entries will be parked outside at the Toy-A-Thon area, weather permitting. The public will determine the winner by “dollar bill voting” for their favorite. Voting will be open at 6 p.m. The winner will be announced at 6:30 p.m. on KZSN radio station.

At 4 p.m. Dec. 2, there will be a “fashion show” as the shopping carts go down an aisle at Wal-Mart. The creators of each cart can walk with their creation if they so choose.

First prize is a $75 Visa gift card; second is a $50 Visa gift card; and third is a $25 Visa gift card. The top three carts also will be featured in the Parade of Lights on Dec. 4.

Entry forms and rules for the cart competition are available at Hutchinson Credit Union’s Newton branch at 2201 S. Kansas Ave. or at the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, 501 N. Main St.
